The Konkan fantasy

Guess most of my trips occur in pairs...My bangalore cousin had come to chennai for a short 2 day visit..we had roamed the city for 1 day and the other day we had been to pondicherry ..it was 16th July and my cousin left Chennai by the shatabdi in the morning..there awaited a 8 day visit to my grandma's place in Mumbai..i had my flight at 1400hrs in the afternoon..after packing things up quickly ..left my house @ 1200..there was huge traffic pile up @ kathipara junction but luckily i eached the airport by 1245..so i checked in and boarded the spicjet flight to mumbai...the usual ATC delay made us wait near the runway for 15mins..then in a few minutes time i was up in the sky 35000ft above sea level...had a nice ariel view of the chenni city..cud spot the porur lake vaguely...since mine was a low cost carrier...i had 2 shell out 100 bucks for some "measured" food...had a nice afternoon nap and at around 4pm my flight was approaching the chatrapathi sivaji international airport runway ...as the plane descended i could spot those match box type apartments..and the horribly jam packed slums which lie just outside mumbai airport wall...the weather was pretty fine ..i got down 2 get my luggage and i was in search of a taxi to get to wadala(the place wer my grandma lived)..i was approached by guy who tld that the govt fixed rate for the 16km journey was 950 rupees !!!!i knew he was a tout and hence avoided him...i walked a bit pushing the trolley almost .75km away from the airport...i got into a taxi i the main road...had to shell out 180bucks though the normal fare is just arnd 120..reached wadala in 40mins...relaxed a bit ..my grandma was very happy on seein me...and she offered me some nice yummy fud..which i cudnt resist...i missed my grandpa's presence who had passed a way a year ago..i started scanning the suburban railway time table( my favrt childhood hobby)...started plannin of wat to do the next day...and finally decided to go to panvel ...i walked to the matunga temple and the aasthik samaj...had some nice behl puri and pani puri..and spent the rest of the evening @ home...

Day 1:
Dad had come on some office work ..met him...went wid him to Mumbai High court regarding some land documents to be transferred...that was the first time i had been 2 a high court (though i have been 2 a sessions and magistrate court in chennai for some petty traffic offences :)) )..it was a complete mess..very cramped..spent some time der and had lunch outside...in the evening dad had arranged car to go to the famous SiddhiVinayak and Mahalakshmi temples...
Had to pass through several layers of security as these temples come under high risk category..
The day ended with a dinner outside..

Day 2:
My panvel trip plans were spoilt due to my dad's arrival ..so i decided 2 make it this day...i got up late @ arnd 10am ..had fud and left for VT station at around 1230pm...boarded a slow local in the harbour line @ wadala station...it took 20mins 2 reach VT.. i was surprised to see the all new hi tech VT station..it had electronic boards flashing the stock market tradings of various companies...i went on hunting for a All India Railway timetable..but i was unsuccessful...i got the ticket for panvel..and got into the train...69km jrny with 23stops...the best part of this jrny was the 3kms long bridge over the sea between mankhurd and vashi...took some nice snaps...now i entered the navi mumbai area...all the stations were spic and span something unusual in mumbai suburban rly..i finally reached panvel...got down ..had some batata vada..roamed around the main line platforms..walked up and down for a while..took some snaps from amazing angles...purchased a mineral water bottle and boarded a train back to wadala...infact wadala comes in between panvel and VT..but i decided 2 travel the entire stretch..thats why went all the way to VT and took a panvel train...as i was travelling back ...an idea tossed up in my mind..."How about going to Pune tmrv !!!"..I wanted to spend some time wid my grandma but now a pune trip was tempting me....so i went home and revealed my plans to my grandma..she was upset that i wudnt be spending time wid her..somehow i convinced her and went to Dadar station to book a train tkt to pune for early nxt morning..i got the tkt with ease and now i decided to buy a suburban tkt to the nxt station matunga ..and from there i wud walk home..
i wanted to purchase the rly timetable badly..which i cudnt get even in chennai..so i decided to enter the express train platform and buy one...i luckily got one..but that luck was soon followed by bad luck ...i thought my suburban ticket entitled me 2 roam on the express platform without a platform ticket..but i was wrong !!!!..i was caught red handed by the TTE...i explained my stance...but he wasnt ready to listen to me...i was issued an EXCESS FARE TICKET(dats the usual railway fine bill) of RS253 (250 for the fine and 3 rupees for the platform ticket !!!!)..i took
the train back to matunga...and frm der i walked back sadly to my grandma's place...it was for the third time in 2 months time that i was getting caught to the police...was making the indian govt (plus some govt servants) richer on evry instance :)...I had delicious fud prepared my grandma and slept early...

Day 3:
The Pune intercity express was @7am...instead of taxi(which wud cost 30bucks) decided 2 walk all the way the way till dadar(20mins walk) as a sort of punishment for having wasted 253 bucks !..but that proved to be a bigger punishment..i got confused with the turnings and took a wrong turn..ended up walkin in the wrong direction...i felt i could still make it on time ..trusting my foot i walked damn fast...luckily i made it on time...the train departed just as i stepped into my compartment...the coaches were empty..thanks to the new Mumbai-Pune Expressway...there were very few takers for the train and dats y i got the ticket so easily !!!
The train zoomed through the suburbs of mumbai...i started taking pics as usual :)...the western ghats were amazing but after some nice breakfast i slept away..only to wake up @ lonavala...Pune is a place wer i have been bf4 and stayed one complete year(when i was in 2nd std)..so i planned to visit the Bajaj Tempo quarters(dad wrked der for 1yr) and also visit our own house which we have rented...the train was bang on target...arrived exactly on time ...I had some food at Hotel Dreamland opp to the Pune station...went to the bus depot and with gr8 difficulty boarded a bus heading to karve road...i cudnt decipher the marathi numerals on the buses ..so had a tuf time ...after a hour long jrny through the congested roads..i made it to my house...my mom had informed them that i wud be visiting their place..so they served me some snacks and coffee...i had a look at the house..was really impressed by their maintainence...wish they cud help me set my hostel room :)...I quickly left their place hunting for a McDonald's outlet...After 15mins of searching..i finally found 1...had the usual VegPizza Mcpuff and french fries..Left the place to board a bus for akurdi(20kms away)..akurdi was where the bajaj quarters was located...the journey took 1 hr..and i reached the place around 1415..the roads were changed..lots of construction activity ...new subways...things do change in 12yrs time...things change so much that Bajaj Tempo was now Force Motors !!!! i took a pic of the main gate...had nostalgic memories of the time spent there....i walked in slowly inside the quarters...was able to recollect the road leading to my apartment inside...I climbed the terrace of my apartment ..took some nice snaps..i was doing all this silently as though a terrorist had sneaked into the territory and doing suspicious activity...time flew so fast that i realised that it was time for me to get back to mumbai...i slowly walked out of the quarters..got a bit senti...walked and luckily got a govt bus (ASIAD service) to mumbai...now i was to experience world class travel experience in the new EXPRESSWAY...i must say that this is easily the best road in India..the blore-mysore and delhi-agra highways might come a distant second !!!the bus zoomed through the expressway...everything abt that road was world class..the overbridges...lanes..medians...tunnels...width..I convinced the driver that i am interested in photography and persuaded him to allow me 2 sit in the front seat adjacent to the driver in order to take pics while on the move....took some nice shots...i travelled 180kms in 2hrs(a big feat on indian roads)..i was in my grandma's place sharp at 6pm !!..I was dead tired..and decided to crash...Nxt day i had booked tkts(booked the tkts in chennai itself) for Goa...1 day trip 2 goa!!!!

Day 4:
I had to wake up @4am bcos my train was at 0530...this time i dint want to believe my foot..decided to take a taxi to dadar...was bit difficult to get one in the morning ...i reached the station wid ease and boarded the Dadar-Madgaon Janshatabdi...I loved the livery of the coaches..was different from other trains...i was very excited about this trip..as it was for the 1st time i was 2 take the Konkan railway route...i planned 2 shoot pics of the mountains throughout the journey...but since i had got up @4..i quickly fell asleep ...only to get up at around 0930...i lost 4hrs of sightseeing !!!!!!! was feelind damn bad...but luckily i hadnt missed much..the realy beauty of konkan was to follow thereafter..junta got down at Chiplun station and the train was literally empty after chiplun...the train was to reach Madgaon only at 4pm(normally its 2pm but Konkan rly follows a differnt timetable in the monsoons..due to increased speed restrictions in the monsoons..and i was travelling durin the monsoons!!!)..the terrain was so tough ..that i wonder how the built the railway tracks in such difficult conditions...interesting there were some nets laid over the rocks nearby the rocks to prevent the boulders from rolling on to the tracks..konkan railway also uses a pilot engine which travels 5mins ahead of the train as a safety measure to ensure that the track is free of any obstructions due to boulders...another interesting thing on konkan railway is ..it was printed 750kms on my ticket but actual distance is oly around 525kms...thats bcos the cost is calculated based on distance..since konkan railway need 2 recover the money spent on the tuf terrain faster...they charge for 40% extra distance..so that 750 on my ticket wanst the actual but the charageable distance !! ok enough of railway funda..now back to travel :)....it was bit sunny as i reached Ratnagiri(the hometown of the underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim)....the train halted for more than 20mins der...post ratnagiri ..the scenary was simply stupendous..nice waterfalls...bridges...green carpet trees and grass all over..it was also raining heavily...i was keen in taking more and more snaps...and did so risking the camera and my life by peeping out of the train...The train whizzed past a few small stations and arrived @Madgaon 10mins late...the station was strikingly clean and well maintained...i moved out and took a public bike(something unheard !!!)..since i carried no luggage except for my backpack...i sat in the pillon of a bike which had a driver !!!!i took this as it was the cheapest among the available modes of transport..i had planned to visit the Colva Beach..11kms from Madgaon station...I reached the beach in 15mins breathing fresh air....I got one and a half hours to spend as my return train to mumbai was only at 1840...i took nice snaps...could spot a lot of holiday couples...was feeling lonely ;)...i dissolved my feelings in the water and played wid the waves for a while....then i decided to have some coffe at Cafe coffee day..dint want to risk wid the food outside bcos Goa has a reputation for non veg stuff...everything smells fishy over der (pun intended) :)) !!!!!!! I took a bus back to the station....As i had been outing for a week...dint have time to chk out orkut and mail...so spent half an hour in the modern cybercafe located inside Madgaon station...My train back 2 mumbai was half an hour late(it was coming from mangalore)...i boarded the train...had some substandard rice in the pantry...and slept peacefully...

Day 5:
I reached the destination Lokmanya Tilak Terminus(Kurla) ...from there i had to cross a bridge to board a local to wadala...i reached home @ 8am...had some nice breakfast...spent some time reading newspaper....meanwhile my school friend Sudharshan bhatija(now in IIT Bombay pursuing Engg Physics) had called me and we decided to meet up at Andheri McDonald...so i took a local to Andheri from Wadala...We met for an hour and the time was 4pm..My uncle's house was in Andheri ..and hence i decided to go there for overnight stay...I met my cousin who was preparing for JEE..gave him some tips(only bcos he asked me!!!)...spent the evening chit chatting with uncle and aunt...had some really delicious food and slept off

Day 6:
Got up only @11am ..it was like a day wasted in mumbai..dint do much...had planned to go to surat for 1 day to meet my friends in NIT Surat...had my train at night 2220 from mumbai central...it was a passenger train ..i purposefully booked a passenger train bcos i din want to end up reaching surat at some awkward time of 3am....dis one reached only @ 6am...My uncle dint want me to go on yet another trip and hence he asked me 2 saty back and guss Surat....but the traveller in me prevented from paying heed to his request...I decided to go ahead with the Surat plan..but it got late ...i knew i couldnt reach Central...so i decided to board the train in borivali(the train arrived @ 2330 in borivali)..my uncle dropped me @ andheri station and after an anxious wait in the suburban tkt counter i could get into the borivali local only @ 2300hrs
..its a 20min jrny normally from andheri to borivali...unfortunately my local got caught in some signal and i reached borivali @ 2328 !!!..i immdtly got down crossed over to the mainline and just as i entered the platform..the passenger arrived!!!! thank god i was on time....it was horibly crowded..and reservation meant no meaning ....i pushed myself into the coach and boarded the train...i found my berth and i fell asleep immdtly...Had kept an alarm @5..as this train was headed for ahmedabad..so if i snooze...i wud be landing in ahmedabad !!!!!

Day 7:
Luckily i got up on time and got down at Surat station...was hunting for a share auto..but since it was 6am..i cudnt find one...but to my surprise i got an auto to NIT surat for 40bucks(approx 10kms)...something our auto guys in chennai must learn!!!...i reached the main gate in 20mins...form there i called my friend and to gimme directions to reach his hostel...was a nice green campus with lots of security protection...but the campus was a bit small...i finally reached his hostel...we talked to each other for sometime...brushed my teeth..went to the mess for breakfast...then we took bath and left to meet two other guys in an other hostel..it was a nice time meeting the old classmates...we were walking around the campus having an arbit discussion ...we planned to hav lunch outside..so we walked to the main road and caught an auto...after some 20mins of raomin he finally took us to the McDonald in some posh shopping area...i ordered the usual Mcpuff and french fries...ppl in surat seemed to be obscenely rich...we took snaps along with the Ronald McDonald( McD Mascot)..we shared a few comic scripts from films and later headed back to the hostel...my train to mumbai was at 1555..so had to rush back to the station...i transfered the pics taken in th cellfone onto a pen drive and made a move 2 the station..the autowallah did a nice job of rushing me 2 the station...i quickly boarded the Surat -bandra terminus express...was a nice four and a half hour journey...i did a bit of rail fnning...took videos of the Rajdhani zoomin past us in the opp direction(relative speed of over 220kmph !!!!)..reached bandra (a mumbai suburb) at 2030....i took a local to wadala..and reached home at 2100hrs approx...was dead tired...had fud and crashed !!!

Day 8:
It was time for me 2 leave...grandma was angry with me for having planned a 8 day trip to mumbai and literally not spending even a single day with her...but my wishes of visiting various places was fulfilled..My flight was at 1130...i took a taxi and reached the airport...the Mumbai airport after its privatisation looks cool and amazing...i had to go through the security checks...boarded the spicejet flight...as expected there was a half an hour delay....Off i went into the sky...a huge city appeared so small in my eyes...slowly mumbai disappeared...and one and a half hours later chennai started appearing...i cud spot the porur lake once again...as i touched down the runway...my 8 day trip came to an end....it was time for me to get ready for the biggest trip ever..the four and a half month trip to my institute in PILANI !!!!!! :)))))

Shimla-Kulu-Manali Trip

Day 0:
12th October ...the day i finished wid my management course exam...got 10 days holidays as part of college culfest...OASIS2K7...6 days trip to the himalayas was awaiting...it was a very well planned holiday..credit goes to my dad for bookin the best of hotels and the marvellous FORD ENDEAVOUR..which made the trip even more fantastic..dad and mom arrived in delhi on 12th night by Jet airways...they relaxed at a nearby hotel for the night...they had booked the wonderful kalka shatabdi for 3 of us...but i had different plans in store..i left pilani only on 12th nite and reached delhi on 13th morning 4am..the bus journey is one of the most pathetic journeys u can ever have..had some quarrel with a fellow passenger regarding the seat...i stood for two thirds of the journey and finally got a seat only at Rohtak(80kms frm delhi)..was a forgettable bus jrny...thebus dropped me@ hazrat nizamuddin at arnd 4am...

DAY 1:
i had booked a tkt frm nizamuddin to kalka by the HIMALYAN Queen exp...my train was @0525..so i cudnt meet my parents in delhi..their train was @ 0740...i had booked this way bcos i wanted 2 take the mountain toy train from kalka 2 shimla..and only the himalayan queen timings were suited to take the connecting toy train @ Kalka..my parents werent interested in the toy train so they alighted @chandigarh and zoomed 2 shimla in da FORD ENDEAVOUR
The train slowly chugged out of delhi..and was on its way 2 chandigarh..since i had booked only second sitting...the huge office crowd 2 the nearby panipat sonipat and karnal was intolerable..ppl wer falling allover..initially there was a confusion regardin the coach number ..since th railway staff had made a mistake while sticking the coach number...the same coach number was printed on 2 coaches...the TTE had a tuf time handling the issue
..finally all the issues were settled..and my train reached Kalka bang on time @ 1120...the toy train was waiting for me at the narrow guage platform..the train was at 1210 only so spent sometime exploring the kalka station...explored the narrow guage engine and its design...the olden type signalling system was also quite impressive...had nice hot tea in a CUPPA(introduced by laloo the wooden cups to prevent usage of plastics)..was quite refreshing..my train's departure was delayed due to the late coming of NDLS shatabdi (the train which my dad had booked) ..it seems the toy train wud depart only after the arrival of the delhi shatabdi...i never knew that..else wud hav come by shatabdi itself !!!!!was feeling upset on having missed the new modern european style LHB coaches of the shatabdi...never mind was to return back 2 delhi frm chandigarh by the shatabdi...so consoled myself thinking of dat !!!!! the toy train depareted half an hour behind schedule...now here i opened my Sony Ericcson K790i..had kept it switched off right from pilani..in order to preserve battery for takin snaps in da mountains....the 3.2megapixel cam came in handy..and i started shootin pics like a maniac...i took 500 pics in dat 5 and a hr journey...the batteries lasted exactly til my train chugged into SHIMLA rly station...the moment i took the pic of the Shimla station board..the message battery over flashed !!!!!thank god i was lucky !!!!My parents received me at the station..they had reached shimla from chandigarh by road(which is faster..but less thrilling :) )..was lookin funny..i was being received by my parents at the Capital of Himachal Pradesh 2500kms away frm my house in chennai !!!was hugely excited after seeing the mighty FORD ENDEAVOUR !! omg wat a fantabulous SUV it is !!! costs around 16lacs i hrd...we headed straight to a hanuman temple and later to the hotel..the hotel is a 12 storeyed one ...imagine 12 storeyed hotel in a hilly city like SHIMLA !! unbelievable...i still cant imagine as to how they built that hotel !ordered fried rice in the room and then went on to crash..!!

DAY 2:
Naldehra(all close 2 Shimla)...the first destination was da Shimla Helipad adjacent 2 thethe next morning after the usual morning rituals was ready 2 go 2 Kufri, fagu valley and governor's residence...spotted some Yaks there and had to pay the yak guy 10 rupees for taking a pic wid the Yak! wonder how innovative ppl are wen it comes 2 making money !!We then reached Kufri...here we were kinda looted by the guide who misguided us and swindled 900 bucks for some horse ride to the Fagu valley....though the alley was awesome..900 was a bit on the higher side...we viewed ice capped mountains through the telescope..took snaps....had some fud..and were back 2 chini bunglow for lunch..the hotel maintained by HPTDC was awesome..gr8 fud and ambience...we had some ice cream ,purchased some wooden artefactsand later left for Naldehra...Naldehra has the World's Highest Golf Course...was a nice 9 hole golf course...the pine trees surrounding the place deserves mention..We spent 2 hrs there ..had some tea and left for the hotel...on the way back we were listening to the radio commentry of the India australia match..which as usual india lost !!!!we reached the hotel at arnd 5 in the evening..we relaaxed a bit and walked to the MALL road..which is THE road of shimla..u get evrythin...its similar to ranganthan street in chennai...mom purschased a sweater...i bought popcorn :)..din want to spend unnecessrily !..the road had many British type buildings..was nice 2 look at them....we had food at India Cafe...was damn oily ..wasnt the best of foods we had....
we called it for the day and crashed at the hotel room...had nice sleep...was gearing up for the 280km drive 2 manali...

DAY 3:
i must tell u that Shimla is a very sleepy city..Though we planned to leave early at around 6...non availablity of hot water delayed our start by 2hrs..it seems only at 730 in da morning the hotel ppl cud provide hot water..we left for manali..the route was fully mountainous ...we planned 2 travel through the day for travel safety reasons...we were going thru the mountains ...plus we had to stop freq to allow the opp direction vehicle 2 proceed as roads were narrow
..the landscape was marvellous..as we reached Sundernagar..the driver wanted 2 change the nameplate as it got damaged in shimla when a vehicle which was takin reverse banged and broke the nameplate..he got it changed it at Mandi..meanwhile i had an arguement wid mom as to whether we must proceed straight to manali and cover Manikaran on the return journey or cover Manikaran 1st...i felt it wud be almost impossible 2 cover in return jrny...as usual i thrusted my opinion and won the arguement :) hence we decided 2 cover manikaran 1st and the n go 2 manali..Beas started flowin alongside the road...huge mountains and beautiful bluish green river flowin through in the valley...was a visual delight..stopped and took pics..thy were worth the wait....the entire stretch from Mandi to kulu was amazing....we encountered a 5km long tunnel..had a nice drive through it..we then had a late lunch @ arnd 3pm in a dhaba...
all...very very narrow road...there was not enuf room forthen we reached Kulu from where we had 2 change direction to reach manikaran 40km away..dis 40km stretch was the scariest of even one vehicle 2 go !!!!but the driver was skilled and made the task look so simple..we spotted a nice bright rainbow on our way to Manikaran..we witnessed the places where Krrish movie was shot..the banks of the river Parvati..wer hrithik and Priyanka meet we also saw the suspension bridge that they show in Dil Se song...!!!!.meanwhile we reached Manikaran @5pm...Manikaran is famed for the Hot sulphur springs..we went to the gurudwara and the shiva temple der...it seems that the water is so hot that ppl cook rice usng dat water !!!!!....
Took some snaps..was an amazing hot spring...we were now headin back 2 manali80kms away..we had some snacks and at around 6pm we left...it was gettin dark...and luckily the skilled driver managed the tough roads and helped us reach manali @ 9pm...we had 2 pay some crap toll tax of 300 rupees for entering manali..we had booked the stay @ Hotel Kalpana in loghuts area..was damn posh and quiet....we checked in to the hotel ..we had nice kind hotel staff.who helped us in gettin comfortable ..we ordered food in the room as it was shivering cold in manali in the night..
we then slept getting ready for the ROHTANG PASS experience...

DAY 4:
Woke up lazily and after the usual morning rituals had nice sandwiches...then slid the curtain ..and there i saw snow capped mountains !!! for the 1st time ever (actually saw them bf4 thru telescope in shimla)..the song that came to my mind was "Pudhu Vellai Mazhai" frm ROJA.i had exactly the same feelings running through my mind as madhubala had in dat song !! .incidentally that song was shot at the same location !!!!!!(mani ratnam made us believe manali is kashmir !!!)...We 1st went to Manu rishi temple (believed 2 be the temple frm wer human race originated)..then wen went to the famous HADIMBA Temple(the temple wer aravind samy is kidnapped frm in the Film Roja)..took nice snaps ..enjoyed the surroundings(was full of deodhar trees)...then we quickly moved in 2 the car headed straight for ROHTANG PASS..this i would say is easily the BEST DAY OF MY LIFE...this day 16th October 2007 would be etched in my memory forever...omg wat a visual treat those icy mountains wer !!!!
We filled fuel bf4 we started climbing..rohtang is 51kms frm manali and 3950mts above sea level whereas manali is apporx 2200mts abve sea level...the roads wer narrow and steep...hats off 2 the Border Roads Organisation for having built and maintained this road...its the true test of calibre...This was the place where the ENNAVALE song in the film Kaadhalan and the song Poo pookum osai frm Minsara Kanavu wer shot....we played the same songs in the car and got the feel of the song !!!!!!We kept climbing steadily despite the rough road...we spotted some amazing waterfalls...we were alongside the SOLANG VALLEY...we stopped at a place 2 hire the fur coats and gum boots reqd 2 play in the Ice...the costumes were rented @ 100 per set...we proceeded ahead..Beas was flowing all along..Infact beas originates from the Rohtang Pass...We were nearin Rohtang ....there was a heavy traffic build up....a bridge had broken ut the border roads organisation did a gud job by making an alternative route ...we stopped at Marhi and had sum food....the food was a bit expensive but the geography of the place justified it being dat expensive...finally we reached a height where there was ice and snow all around us...we spotted some forzen waterfalls and glaciers enroute...took snaps and moved swiftly 2 Rohtang amidst a mild snowstorm...everything was new to me and i loved every bit of the things happening around me...At the rohtang Pass the weather was terribly cold...i become numb..and the blood in my tongue froze..so cudnt even utter a word !!!!all of us looked like eskimos in our costumes !! took some snaps with gr8 difficulty and excitement...we spent close to 45mins at the PASS...
many of the travellers went past the Pass headin twrds LADAKH..(450kms away)but we decided to return back 2 Manali..the return journey was nice ..as it was quite sunny as we got down...The ice capped mountains sizzeled and appeared 2 me as if i had landed up in Switzerland..no wonder Manali is called the Switzerland of India...we reached down at around 1645...since we were quite tired..we GUSSed Solang Valley which is an amazing valley overlooking the ice mountains...we reached the hotel and crashed..we were so tired that we even gussed the dinner...

DAY 5:
If shimla is a sleepy city..then Manali is even worse..got up late and we went to the Vashisht Temple wer again we witnessed Hot sulphur Springs..Then we headed towards Kulu..we went to jagatsukh temple and took snaps...on the way 2 kulu at a place called Naggar we went 2 the Dakpo Shedrup Ling Tibetan Monastery....was an amazing place to visit...nice silent atmosphere and i was entering a monastery for the 1st time in my life...was impressed with the cleanliness and orderliness...I went thru Buddha's sayings and various other aspects of buddhism..was hugely impressed...then i left the monastery after takin a few pics....we reached Kulu and crossed the Beas to reach the Vaishno Mata temple...was a differenlt styled temple..liked the place very much...the beas was flowing swiftly and there were these Lofty Himalayas in the backdrop ...we took few pics and headed twrds chandigarh..300kms away...the route was same till Mandi..after that we had to turn direction to take the Chandigarh highway...the journey was tiresome as we were continuously winding along the hills...there was a big traffic jam in the punjab border checkpost..it took half an hour for the traffic to clear up..we finally descended the hills and were on the plains...we were close to the famous anandpur sahib gurudwara..but since we were damn tired we gussed it and headed straight for our hotel in chandigarh..we breaked a bit at a dhaba for tea...we whizzed past mohali and finally reached the hotel in sector 21 at around 8pm...the hotel (HOTEL AROMA)was located in a posh locality
and all the major food chains had their outlets nearby...we ordered the food in the room ...i hogged some south indian stuff quickly as i was watching India chase australia in the final one day match at mumbai on Tv...zaheer khan had 2 exhibit his heroics in batting while india was chasing a modest target with great difficulty..India won the match finally and i crashed on to the bed...
Day 6:
I had to wake up quite early as we had to catch the early morning 0650 Shatabdi to delhi...The driver was ready and we left the hotel at 6am sharp...as we reached the station..driver was helping us out remove our luggage...he dropped us at Platform No1 where our train was to arrive...he could easily be the best drivers i have ever seen ..he was polite and courteous all throughout the journey..he gave us his address and asked us to post the snaps we took along with him..naturally he impressed my dad and hence he received a handsome sum as bata...he left the place only to come back after 5mins...i had left a cowboy hat (which i had purchased in shimla) in the car...he came back all the way to return it..was so nice of him to do that...now it was time for the Shatabdi to arrive at the station(the train was from kalka and headed to new delhi)...i was damn excited about the new foreign style LHB coaches i would be travelling in...but i was in for a huge disappointment...the shatabdi had the old type coaches(the one similar to the chennai-mysore shatabdi)...i was surprised initially ..then i pondered over the reason as to why the coaches were old..actually there are 2 pairs of shatabdis running between New Delhi and Kalka..one in the morning and one in the evening ..from both directions...one had the new LHB coaches and the other had olden type coaches...the one that departs from delhi in the morning (the one my parents took on day1 ) reaches kalka in the noon and departs from kalka in the evening...since i had booked the morning shatabdi frm chandigarhLHB coaches.!!! was pretty sad for about 1 hr into the journey...then they served breakfast ...after munchin the cutlet and bread...i was feeling better...the train had just one stop at ambala...i got down there..ambala was a special place..i remember reading a lesson in school.."Woman at Platform 8"...the story was set in ambala station...so i got nostalgic memories of school...and the class i was in...got a bit psenti over it...but then had to wipe my emotions as the signal changed to amber...the train zoomed past karnal kurukshetra panipat and sonipat and slowly entered delhi...train was 20mins late...and we arrived at platform 1..a driver was standing with the nameboard..he received us..and now my parents had their flight at 1700hrs and it was only 1030 then...so we had to kill time somehow...we decided to roamd around delhi...went to the usual India Gate..Rajpath...Janpath..Connought Circle...Lotus Temple and Qutub Minar...Qutub Minar was marvellous..it was standing tall amdist green lawns and some broken structures....took some snaps..and quickly left the place...we had lunch in one dhaba and then it was time for me 2 say goodbye 2 my parents...normally i take the Haryana Roadways bus from New Delhi ISBT to Pilani..(ISBT -Rohtak-Bhiwani-Loharu-Pilani) but since Qutub Minar was nearer to the airport and very far off from ISBT..the driver dropped me at dhaula kuan(5kms frm airport)..this was a new route to me ..was initially bit nervous...but luckily i got a bus to chirawa(16kms frm pilani)...the bus journey was pathetic..so crowded and stoppin everywhere..the route was Dhaula kuan-Rewari-Narnaul-Chirawa...iit took 5.5 long hours 2 reach Chirawa...i got down at chirawa and called my dad...he had reached Chennai !!!!!was feeling really crazy...technology has improved so much that a person is able 2 cover 2000kms in 2and half hours ...whereas i was utilising a bus service which hardly manged to cover 200kms in 5 and a half hours !!then i had to wait for a bust to pilani for half an hour..i was unsuccesful and i really got pissed off dat i decided to take a heavily crowded jeep..got a nice 10 bucks offer for a 16km journey and i zoomed back into the pilani territory...i had to walk from the main gate back to my hostel...my college culfest was taking place in full swing...there were lights all over...i reached my hostel only to find that all my wingies(the guys alongside my room) had all gone on a trip to Rishikesh-Mussorie-Nainital....guess they got the roaming inspiration from me !!!! i had no company ....so i decided 2 see wat was happening in th culfest(it takes place for 96hrs nonstop..so events are held even at 2am !!)..i unpacked and after a bit of rest...moved out of my room...there ended the wonderful 6 day long trip..which i would never forget forver..but this wasnt the end ..as it was the beggining of yet another two day trip...for more see my next blog !!!

Ranthambore Safari

It was 18th October..my college culfest OASIS 2k7 was going on..I had jus returned from a mamoth 6 day trip 2 kulu manali shimla...was lazing around after the pathetic bus journey from Delhi to Pilani via chirawa...infact i had to wait for 30mins and take a jeep from chirawa to pilani(16kms away) as my bus was from dhaula kuan to chirawa only...the jeep had easily over 20 ppl crushed into it..the jeep reminded me of the famous FEVICOL AD !!! ..got a nice 10 rupee offer(for 16kms !!)..so dint mind the junta...i arrived in my Insti @ arnd 830pm...there was Lucky Ali's show @10pm...i bought a stub for that show from my senior for 150bucks and managed 2 get a seat in the heavily crowded auditorium...the show was awesome with Lucky ali finishing it up wid Ek PAl ka jeena frm KNPH...it was 0130,19th october....was roamin around the campus.. gobbled up 3 patties,1 plain dosa,1 plain maggi and a double coffe in ANC(All night canteen though its open only till 2am :) )..just as i was headin back 2 my hostel room..i met a senior who asked me if i was ready for a 2 day trip to ranthambore agra and bharatpur....imagine facing this question aftr roamin for 6 days nonstop !!!!! i dint know what 2 answer...after few mins i replied in the affirmative....OMG i dint know where the enthu came from..i was ready for yet another trip !!!!!!! The trip was to start on 19th night frm Pilani....13 of us(all wer seniors except of course myself !!!!!)...We got up in the morning..browsed various sites and were busy finalising the routes and places to be covered..we saw the routes in google earth and had got a decent picture of what was in store for the 2 days...
Then we had 2 call the redi wala(the roadside eatout shop who owns INNOVA,qualis, tavera and wat not...he is the unofficial travel agent for BITSians !!!!) We booked one tavera and one qualis ..he charged Rs6.5 per km against the normal Rs5.5 per km..he sensed the holiday mood in us and wasnt ready to compromise on the rate...after a bit of arguments..we finally settled for Rs6.25 per km. !!!! Since we had to take warden permission 2 go out...and none of us had...we took the Ganga Store exit and sneaked out of the campus and asked the cars 2 come outside the Main Gate..After a bit of confusion among us as to who must board which car...we finally started frm pilani @ 10pm....i was in the Tavera...and the qualis was followin us....we collected the common pool money of 500 per head(this was just the initial payment..later we collected 500 at many stages as they got used up ) and i was to maintain the accounts for the trip...each and evry expenditure was to be used from the common pool and accounted in a diary !Was a difficult Task...We were heading to Ranthambore via Jaipur...our plan was to take the morning 630am jungle safari..we had to fill fuel @ arnd midnight ..then we had a stop at a DHABA..we ate well..and the common pool required an addition 500 rupees within 3 hrs of start of the journey!!!!!!! so 1000 per head was spent within 3 hrs !But that included the fuel bill so dat was ok....Till Jaipur the journey was top class...mind u Rajasthan state highways are quite good...but Jaipur to Ranthambore was a nightmare..we reached the Ranthambore ticket counter at 0625..we were just in time..bcos 0630 the counter was to be closed...the safari costed 285bucks per head...( i dint expect iit to be so costly though safaris are normally expensive..i dint know dat)The tickets were issued in such a manner that we got spilt into two groups one had 8 ppl and the other 5...and ranthambore is such a big forest that the safaris are done on 5 different routes in a big open Caravan....so both the gropus had 2 go on different routes...it was 3.5hr safari...we travelled through the densest of forest areas..the guide was showin us some so called PUG MARKS for more than 2hrs ..we lost hope of spottin a tiger....finally the driver applied sudden breaks...a tiger whizzed past the front of the caravan...evry1 was amazed...Yo i spotted a TIGER !!!the guide tld lookin at me"Chillao Mat..chillayenge to Tiger baagh jaayega !!!"Guess my voice cud frighten even a tiger !!!!!! The tiger went behind the bush and gave a CATwalk !!! went around our vehicle..and then silently moved away...we took some nice snaps of the tiger and the tiger was like within 10 feet frm us...It was a gr8 moment in my life..We guys were thinking and hoping that the other 5 wudnt hav spotted one :)...At 10am when the safari ended..we had travelled 40kms in the jungle and finally met the other group...unfortunately they had spotted a tiger but fortunately they wernt as fortunate as our grp (evil thought u see)!!!! their tiger was like 1km away..across a valley !!!Then we were recounting the experiences of the safari for a while and we had to go to sawai madhopur main city for brunch...we zoomed in our vehicles and finally spotted a mediocre restaurant near the railway station..we had the usual northy stuff of naans and panner etc etc !!!! it was half an hour past noon..our plan was 2 go for the afternoon safari as well !! we communicated our intentions to the driver...but the driver misunderstood what we said and headed straight towards AGRA...we realised we were offtrack only after we had travelled arnd 40kms !!!!we stopped the vehicle..asked the driver ..and later found that we were headin to AGRA and not ranthambore !!!the group of 5 was very upset..they wanted another chance to spot the tiger but their efforts went in vain...we then decided 2 proceed 2 AGRA which was some 200kms away...this was the worst part of the day..Tyre puncture..horrible road...wrong route taken by driver which caused yet another burden of 75kms !!!!!we made it to bharatpur which is 50kms before AGRA...
930pm...we were busy hunting for a hotel to stay overnight..we were unable 2 fit our budget into many of the hotels..we were roamin arnd unsucessfully for arnd 1hr ...junta started complaining of hunger !!..we found a McDonald's outlet..but unfortunately it was closed that day since some1 nearby had passed away !Luckily we found a nice AC rwe stopped at a dhaba...saw the 20-20 match between india and australia for a while..and later proceeded towards AGRA..finally we reached agra at aroundestaurant called LAXMI VILAS...i must say that it is the best possible south indian hotel in north..maybe DASAPRAKASH can compete with it...we gobbled and hogged as much as we could(note: only a BITS-Pilani student (who is cursed to eat in the mess) would ustand how important food is !!!)We got some horrible lodging in an unnamed hotel !! it costed like some 1500 for 13ppl...the water was close 2 sewer !!!! it was a forgettable stay at that place..we had our alarms set at 5am...we wanted to catch the sunrise @the TAJ MAHAL..but as usual..we kept snoozing so much that for a moment i felt we wud be only catching up with the SUNSET !!!!!we left the place @ 9am ..took an unscheduled stop for breakfast and by the time we were at the TAJ..it was close to 11am !!!!! we were 5hrs behind schedule !!omg...and we had to cover fatehpursikri.. bharatpur bird sanctuary and head back 2 pilani by night!!we spent close 2 two hours @ the TAJ..took nice poses wid friends and relaxed a bit in the shade..it was damn sunny that day..the TAJ looked as beautiful as it is always..this was my 2nd Trip to the Taj..but i liked the monument better this time around...for many it was a 1st time experience..we were recollecting some mughal stories as we were gettin back to the car park..we found the driver missing...after dozens of phone calls he walked cooly ...he delayed our already delayed schedule by 1more hr !!We once again dropped into that yummy LAXMI VILAS for lunch..some of them preferred the McD which was opp to it...we then started frm agra @ around 1430...we were in a fix as to whether we need 2 go to fatehpur sikri or guss it and go straight 2 bharatpur sanctuary..fatehpur sikri is halfway through the highway to bharatpur(50kms frm AGRA)..we then decided 2 go to fatehpur sikri..we were taken to the BULAND DARWAZA by the guide...Buland darwaza is magnificently huge..he showed us the secret passage that akbar made between fatehpursikri and lahore !!!!!that passage has been closed now through agreement between both INDIAN and PAKSITANi govts..else it cud serve as a nice passage for the terrorists !! we enjoyed the evening there...there were some bird enthusiasts who pressed for the bharatpur visit bf4 it got dark..hence we hurried up things at fatehpursikri and headed twrds bharatpur..we reached the sanctuary @ 1730 and it seems the sanctuary close by 1700hrs !!!!! we were disappointed...but as part of consolation all of us took pics infornt of the nameboard of the bird sanctuary !!then we instructed our driver to head back to pilani via ALWAR...we left bharatpur @1800hrs..we had a 300kms journey ahead of us...we reached a rail crossing wer i could luckily capture the mumbai rajdhani zoomin past @ 130kmph ..it had nice bright LHB coaches ...looked like some foreign train...then we were in for some bad roads(expected of rural india)..it was pitch dark..and the direction signs missing..so there were lots of confusion regardin the route 2 be taken at junctions..after a half a dozen mistakes..we were back on track...we reached alwar @2200hrs...i was damn sleepy and hence dint have the dinner along with th other guys..i slept in th car and woke up @2330..and found that we were in the same place !!!!!!! there was F1 race on Tv and the guys had delayed it further..the driver ws damn angry with group and started protesting that he wudnt drive the car till morning..he complained that he dint get sleep throughout the day...afeter various requests..he agreed 2 drive..but he started behaving strangely and started driving @ 120kmph...there was some quarrel betwee the two car drivers and hence they started racing against each other...i was witnessing a NFS race in real life !!!!The driver started smoking heavily to get rid of sleep...infact that act of his made us get rid of our sleep !!!!!we had to ask him to stop smoking..but he wudnt agree ...we kept mum..he zoomed all through the state highway frm alwar to pilani...thank god that section had well maintained roads...we reacherd..rewar..then narnaul...surajgarh and then chirawa... the driver had some tea @ chirawa..then rushed us bak 2 pilani...we finally reached our insti @ 3am !!!!Thank God we were back safe !!!!After completing the formalities regarding payment.i headed straight back 2 crash in my room...the followin morning a guy came and asked me ..shall we go 2 bikaner !!!!!..i said "Oh,no..NOT AGAIN !!!!!"
